The Arrest Of Andrew Lester Over the First-Degree Assault On Ralph Yarl

On April 13, 2023, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot twice by 84-year-old Andrew Lester in Kansas City, Missouri, after mistakenly approaching the wrong property.

Yarl was attempting to collect his younger twin brothers when he rang the doorbell at Lester’s property, which had a “no solicitors” sign on the doorbell.

Andrew Lester, the shooter, claimed he was “protecting himself” and felt scared of Yarl because of his size and age.

However, Yarl denies pulling on the door handle and claims that Lester told him, “Don’t come around here,” after being shot in the head and arm through the glass at the front of the House.

Lester was arrested and released two hours later without charges, but a warrant was issued for his arrest after Yarl’s statement to the Police.

The convict was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action, with a bond set at $200,000.

If convicted, the older man could face life in prison for the assault charge and 3 to 15 years for armed criminal action.

Yarl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery to remove the bullet fragments from his brain.

Family lawyer Lee Merritt called Lester’s claim of being scared “unjustifiable” and said it was “awfully familiar” for black individuals to be seen as a threat in the United States.

Merritt also said the family would investigate whether their civil rights were violated. Even President Joe Biden rang the Yarl family and invited them to the White House when Ralph was well enough.

Yarl’s mother revealed that they spoke about music, with the President saying that if his family had to rely on his musical skills, they would “die hungry.”

In summary, Andrew Lester shot Ralph Yarl twice after mistakenly approaching the wrong property, claiming he was “protecting himself” from a physical confrontation.

Lester was charged with first-degree assault & armed criminal action; if convicted, he could face life in prison.
